Summary

Scirpus microcarpus, commonly known as panicled bulrush, smallfruit bulrush, or barberpole bulrush, is a perennial herb that is part of the sedge family. It is native to wetland areas, including marshes, swamps, and the edges of ponds and streams in North America, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Scirpus microcarpus typically grows from a long rhizome system, reaching heights often exceeding one meter. The plant features erect, three-angled stems with sheathing leaves at the base and higher up the stems. Its inflorescence is a panicle composed of numerous clusters of spikelets and leaflike bracts on long, slender branches. The fruit is a pale, smooth achene less than 2 millimeters long, which is not particularly notable for ornamental purposes.

The panicled bulrush is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and filter water in wetland restoration projects. It is also used in rain gardens and naturalized areas where its adaptability to wet conditions is beneficial. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun but can tolerate part shade, and it is not particular about soil type, tolerating fast, medium, or slow drainage. While it does best with medium amounts of water, it can also withstand periods of flooding. This species is relatively low-maintenance and can be an asset in erosion control. However, it can spread aggressively through its rhizome system, which should be considered when planting in smaller spaces or near garden borders.CC BY-SA 4.0
