Summary
Scleranthus biflorus, commonly known as two-flower knawel or cushion bush, is a perennial herb native to the open grasslands and rocky outcrops of Australia and New Zealand. It is particularly adapted to high-altitude environments where it forms dense, cushion-like mats. This ground-hugging plant reaches only about 2-5 cm in height but can spread up to 30 cm in width, creating a moss-like appearance with its bright green, fine-textured foliage. The inconspicuous, double-headed green flowers bloom in late spring and are less noticeable than the foliage.
Two-flower knawel is valued for its unique texture and form, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, alpine collections, and as a ground cover in well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil with low fertility. Regular watering is necessary, especially in dry conditions, but overwatering should be avoided to prevent root rot. While generally low-maintenance, Scleranthus biflorus can be affected by Rhizoctonia fungus, which causes dead brown patches and may require fungicidal treatment. It is propagated by division or from seed, with division being the preferred method for maintaining dense, healthy mats.CC BY-SA 4.0
