Summary

Sedum praealtum, commonly known as Green Cockscomb, is an evergreen perennial succulent native to rocky outcrops and scrublands in Central America and Mexico. It reaches up to 3 feet tall (90 cm) and spreads to 4 feet (1.2 m). This plant features large clusters of bright, star-like yellow flowers that bloom from late winter to spring, adding a splash of color to the garden during a season when few other plants are in flower. The foliage is thick and fleshy, resembling that of the Jade plant, and the plant has a somewhat treelike appearance, which makes it suitable for bonsai cultivation.

Green Cockscomb is valued for its drought tolerance and is often used in rock gardens, xeriscaping, and as an accent in succulent plantings. Its summer dormancy helps it survive in hot, dry climates. It is also appreciated for its ease of propagation through cuttings. While it thrives in full sun, it can tolerate light shade, and it requires well-drained, poor soils to prevent root rot. It is not cold hardy, so in cooler climates, it should be grown in containers that can be moved indoors during winter.CC BY-SA 4.0
