Estimated Native Range
Summary
Selliera radicans, commonly known as shiny swamp-mat, is a perennial herb native to coastal and swampy areas of Australia, New Zealand, and Chile, including tidal estuaries, wetlands, and damp open ground. It forms a dense, creeping mat with a height of up to 20 cm and can spread to 2 meters wide. The shiny, narrow, spoon-shaped leaves are distinctive, reaching up to 4 cm in length. During summer, it produces small, fan-shaped white flowers that add a subtle charm to its foliage. This species is the primary host plant for the moth Asaphodes frivola, indicating its ecological importance.
Shiny swamp-mat is valued for its ground-covering ability, particularly in wetland restoration projects and for stabilizing soil in damp areas. It is also used in ornamental water gardens and as a low-maintenance option for moist, sunny spots. While it thrives in full sun or part shade, it requires consistently moist conditions and soils with good drainage to prevent root rot. It is not known for significant pest or disease problems, but in drier conditions, it may require additional watering to maintain its lush appearance.CC BY-SA 4.0
