Estimated Native Range
Summary
Senecio crassulus, commonly known as Meadow Groundsel, Thick-stem Groundsel, Mountain-Meadow Butterweed, Mountain-Meadow Groundsel, or Thickleaf Groundsel, is a perennial herb. It is native to the mountainous regions of Western North America, including alpine meadows, rocky cliffs, and tundra environments. This plant typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and is characterized by its fleshy, thick stems and bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that bloom in the summer. The flowers are moderately showy and attract various pollinators.
Meadow Groundsel is valued for its hardiness and adaptability to high-altitude garden settings. It is often used in rock gardens, wildflower meadows, and as a border plant in naturalistic landscapes. Its ability to thrive in less fertile soils and its moderate water requirements make it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners. While it prefers full sun or part shade, it is also tolerant of a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils with medium to fast drainage. Gardeners should be aware that Senecio species can contain toxic alkaloids and should be handled with care to avoid ingestion by pets or children.CC BY-SA 4.0
