Estimated Native Range
Summary
Senegalia berlandieri, commonly known as Guajillo, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to the chaparral, thorn scrub, and desert regions of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 9-15 feet (2.7-4.6 meters) and a width of 8-14 feet (2.4-4.3 meters). The plant has a spreading habit with a dense canopy of fine-textured foliage, and its bark is smooth and light gray. Guajillo is notable for its pinnately compound leaves and fragrant, creamy-white flowers that bloom in late winter to early spring, providing a valuable nectar source for bees when few other plants are in flower.
Guajillo is drought-tolerant and thrives with minimal care, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings in arid environments. It is also used for erosion control and as a forage plant for livestock. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade and is adaptable to a variety of well-drained soils. While it is generally low-maintenance, overwatering should be avoided to prevent root rot. Guajillo is not commonly afflicted by serious pests or diseases, but it can be susceptible to chlorosis in highly alkaline soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
