Summary

Serissa japonica, commonly known as Snowrose, is an evergreen to semi-deciduous shrub native to open woodlands and forest edges in South Central and Southeast China, as well as Taiwan. It typically grows to a height of 45–60 cm and features oval, deep green, rather thick leaves that emit an unpleasant smell when bruised. The shrub’s upright stems branch extensively, creating a wide, bushy dome. Snowrose is notable for its neat habit, dense branch coverage, and prolonged flowering period. The rough, grey trunk, which lightens with age, adds to its ornamental value. Serissa blooms nearly year-round, peaking from early spring to late autumn, with funnel-shaped flowers that are 1 cm wide, emerging as pink buds and maturing into a profusion of white blooms.

Snowrose is appreciated for its long flowering time and the contrast between its dark foliage and bright white flowers. It is commonly used in bonsai, container gardening, and as a ground cover in temperate climates. This plant thrives in part shade, requiring medium amounts of water and well-draining soil. While it is relatively easy to maintain, it benefits from regular fertilization during the flowering season.CC BY-SA 4.0
