Summary

Serruria rosea, commonly known as Rose Spiderhead, is an evergreen shrub endemic to the fynbos heathlands of the Western Cape in South Africa. This member of the Proteaceae family is adapted to a Mediterranean climate with wet winters and dry summers. Rose Spiderhead typically grows to a height of 0.8–1 m (2 ft 7 in – 3 ft 3 in) and is characterized by its erect form and fine, needle-like leaves. The plant produces delicate, rose-pink flowers that are arranged in dense, spider-like heads, blooming from August to October. These blooms are not only attractive but also serve as a food source for native insects, which are the primary pollinators.

Rose Spiderhead is valued for its unique floral display and is often used in ornamental gardens for its striking appearance and ability to attract pollinators. It is suitable for rockeries, native plant gardens, and as a feature plant in Mediterranean-style landscapes. While it requires full sun to thrive, Serruria rosea is relatively low maintenance, needing only moderate watering and well-draining soil. It is, however, sensitive to phosphorus and requires low-phosphorus fertilizers. Gardeners should be aware that this plant can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
