Estimated Native Range
Summary
Shibataea kumasaca, commonly known as ruscus-leaf bamboo or ruscus bamboo, is an evergreen bamboo native to the understory of broad-leaved forests on mountain slopes in Japan and in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces in China. It typically grows to a height of 5 feet (1.5 meters) and is known for its compact, clump-forming habit. The plant features lance-shaped, dark green leaves that resemble those of the genus Ruscus, hence the common name. It does not commonly flower or set seed in cultivation, and its ornamental value lies primarily in its foliage.
Ruscus-leaf bamboo is valued for its lush, evergreen foliage and its ability to form dense clumps, making it suitable for use as a low hedge or ground cover in shaded garden areas. It has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit in the UK, indicating its excellence for garden use. This bamboo prefers moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. While it is relatively low maintenance, gardeners should be aware that it can become invasive under favorable conditions due to its creeping rootstock. To control its spread, it may be necessary to install root barriers or plant it in contained areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
