Summary
Sideroxylon lanuginosum subsp. rigidum, commonly known as Gum Bully, is an evergreen tree native to a variety of habitats including dry, rocky areas, woodlands, and thickets in the Southwestern United States and Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 40-50 feet (12-15 meters) and a width of 15-20 feet (5-6 meters). The tree has a dense, rounded crown with dark green, leathery leaves and rough, gray bark. During the summer, it produces small, inconspicuous white flowers, which are followed by yellow to brown fruits that are attractive to wildlife.
Gum Bully is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in a range of soil types, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings. It is also used as a windbreak or for erosion control due to its sturdy nature. In cultivation, it requires minimal maintenance once established, tolerating both full sun and partial shade. While it prefers well-drained soils, it can adapt to different soil conditions. This species is not commonly affected by serious pests or diseases, but it can suffer from root rot if planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
