Summary

Silene antirrhina, commonly known as Sleepy Catchfly, is an annual herb native to open woodlands, grasslands, and disturbed sites across much of North America. It is also found in similar habitats in parts of Europe where it has been introduced. This species typically grows up to 31 inches tall and is characterized by its sticky glandular stems, which can inadvertently trap small insects. The leaves are lance-shaped, and the plant produces flowers that can be pink, red, or white, blooming from late spring to early fall. The flowers are modest in size and not particularly showy, but they do attract pollinators.

Sleepy Catchfly is often found in recently disturbed areas, including those affected by fire, which can contribute to its reputation as a weedy species. However, it can also be used in wildflower gardens or restoration projects due to its ability to colonize and stabilize disturbed soils. It is drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring well-drained soils. While not commonly used for ornamental purposes, it can add diversity to native plantings and support local wildlife. Potential problems include its tendency to self-seed prolifically, which can make it somewhat invasive in garden settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
