Estimated Native Range
Summary
Silene uniflora, commonly known as Sea Campion, is an herbaceous perennial plant native to coastal cliffs, shingle beaches, and sea ledges of western Europe, including parts of the British Isles, Scandinavia, and the Baltic Sea region. It typically forms low, dense mats with a height of 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) and spreads up to 16 inches (40 cm). The linear, grey-green leaves are fleshy, helping the plant retain moisture in its saline habitat. From late spring to early summer, Sea Campion produces showy white flowers, each with five deeply notched petals, and distinctive inflated sepals that resemble a bladder. The flowers are particularly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Sea Campion is valued for its ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils and its tolerance to salt spray, making it an excellent choice for seaside gardens, rockeries, and as ground cover in coastal landscapes. Its drought resistance and low maintenance requirements also make it suitable for xeriscaping. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade and requires little water once established. While generally disease-free, it can suffer from root rot if grown in poorly drained soils. Sea Campion is not known for being invasive but can self-seed in favorable conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
