Summary
Sisyrinchium montanum, commonly known as Blue-Eyed Grass, is a semi-deciduous perennial herb native to open grasslands, meadows, and the edges of wetlands in Southern Canada, the Intermountain West, and the Northeastern United States. It typically forms dense clumps between 10 and 50 cm (4 and 20 in) tall. The plant features small, star-shaped flowers with six striking purplish-blue tepals and a contrasting yellow center, blooming from late spring to early summer. The flowers are quite showy despite their size and can add a splash of color to garden settings. The fruit is a capsule containing numerous small black seeds.
Blue-Eyed Grass is appreciated for its low maintenance and ability to thrive in a variety of conditions, making it suitable for rock gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. It is also used to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. This plant prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade and requires well-drained soil. While generally pest-free, it can suffer from rust or leaf spot in overly moist conditions. It is not known for being invasive and does not typically present problems with aggressive roots or diseases.CC BY-SA 4.0
