Summary
Skimmia reevesiana, commonly known as Reeves Skimmia, is an evergreen shrub native to the forest understories and shady riverbanks of southern China, Taiwan south to the Philippines. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters), forming a dense, rounded mound. The plant is admired for its glossy, dark green leaves and the clusters of fragrant white flowers that bloom in spring, followed by bright red berries on female plants if a male pollinator is present. The flowers are modest in size but can be quite showy due to their abundance.
Reeves Skimmia is valued for its low maintenance requirements, year-round interest, and ability to thrive in shaded conditions, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and as an understory plant in larger landscapes. It prefers consistently moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil and benefits from mulching to maintain soil moisture. While generally pest-resistant, it can sometimes suffer from scale insects or fungal diseases in poor conditions. It is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, but it should be protected from harsh winter winds and hot summer sun.CC BY-SA 4.0
