Estimated Native Range
Summary
Smilax walteri, commonly known as Coral Greenbrier, Red-berried Greenbrier, or Red-berried Bamboo, is a perennial vine native to the understory of moist, deciduous forests, and thickets along the coastal plains of the south-central, southeastern, and east-central United States, from eastern Texas to New Jersey. It can climb over other vegetation using tendrils, sometimes reaching up to 20 feet above the ground, and is known for its thorny stems and heart-shaped leaves. The plant produces small, inconspicuous yellow-brown flowers in the spring, followed by conspicuous bright red or orange berries in the winter, which are attractive to birds and other wildlife.
Coral Greenbrier is valued for its wildlife benefits and its ability to form dense thickets, providing cover and nesting sites for various species. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, as well as in restoration projects where erosion control is needed. This vine thrives in partial shade to full shade, prefers moist, well-drained soils, and is tolerant of a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy substrates. While generally low-maintenance, it can become aggressive in favorable conditions, potentially outcompeting other plants. Gardeners should be aware of its thorny stems when planting and maintaining this species.CC BY-SA 4.0
