Estimated Native Range
Summary
Solanum douglasii, commonly known as Greenspot Nightshade, is a deciduous perennial subshrub or herb native to coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats in California, Baja California, the Souhwestern USA and Northeast Mexico to Central America. It typically grows up to 2 meters in height and has a sprawling form. The inflorescence is an umbel-shaped array of flowers with star-shaped white corollas up to a centimeter wide, which are modest in appearance but can bloom throughout much of the year. The fruit is a spherical green berry that turns black at maturity, measuring up to a centimeter wide.
Greenspot Nightshade is drought-tolerant and can thrive with very low amounts of water, making it suitable for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It prefers full sun to part shade and well-drained soils. While not commonly used in ornamental horticulture, it can provide habitat and food for native wildlife. Gardeners should be cautious as all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, and it may become weedy in some conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
