Estimated Native Range
Summary
Solidago lepida, commonly known as Western Canada Goldenrod or Western Goldenrod, is a perennial herb that is native to a variety of habitats including moist meadows, streambanks, and open forests across much of Canada and the western United States. It can grow up to 5 feet tall and spreads through underground rhizomes, forming dense clumps. The leaves are lanceolate with coarse teeth and are primarily located along the stem. From late summer to fall, it produces numerous small, bright yellow flower heads in large, showy clusters, each head consisting of 7-22 ray florets encircling 2-13 disc florets.
Western Goldenrod is valued for its vibrant yellow flowers that provide late-season color and its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, wildflower meadows, and as part of pollinator gardens. This plant thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, but it is adaptable to various conditions. While generally low-maintenance, it can spread aggressively in garden settings. Gardeners may wish to manage its spread to prevent it from becoming too dominant.CC BY-SA 4.0
