Summary
Solidago stricta, commonly known as wand goldenrod or willowleaf goldenrod, is an herbaceous perennial native to the southeastern United States, particularly found in pine flatwoods, savannas, and other moist to wet, acidic soils. It is also present in sandy pine barrens and wet coastal plain habitats. This species typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters) with a similar spread and features narrow, willow-like leaves. From late summer to fall (August to November), it produces slender, upright stems topped with dense, wand-like clusters of tiny, bright yellow flowers that are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Wand goldenrod is appreciated for its ornamental qualities, including its showy flower spikes and its role in supporting wildlife. It is often used in native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, and restoration projects. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to partial shade and requires moist to wet, well-drained, acidic soils. While it is relatively low maintenance, it can spread by rhizomes and may need to be managed to prevent it from becoming too aggressive in a garden setting. It is generally pest and disease resistant but can occasionally suffer from rust or mildew in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
