Summary

Solidago velutina, commonly known as Threenerve Goldenrod, is a semi-deciduous perennial herb or subshrub native to open woodlands and grasslands in California, the Southwest US, and Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters) and spreads to a similar width. The plant forms a basal rosette of lanceolate leaves that persist during flowering time, with each leaf showcasing three prominent veins running from the base to near the tip. The foliage may be covered with fine hairs, giving it a velvety texture. As the plant matures, the leaves become progressively smaller up the stem. Threenerve Goldenrod produces numerous small, bright yellow flower heads, up to 500 per plant, in a large, branching array at the top of the plant, blooming from late summer to fall.

Threenerve Goldenrod is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to attract pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, with its showy flowers. It is suitable for xeriscaping, wildflower gardens, and naturalized areas. This goldenrod is relatively low-maintenance, thriving in full sun to part shade, with very low to low water requirements, and preferring well-drained soils. While it is not commonly found in cultivation, it can be used to add late-season color and texture to a garden. It is not known to have aggressive roots or significant disease problems, but gardeners should be aware of its potential to self-seed and spread within the garden.CC BY-SA 4.0
