Summary

Sparmannia africana, commonly known as African hemp or African linden, is a fast-growing evergreen shrub or small tree native to the understory of open woodlands and forest edges in South Africa. It is one of up to seven species within the genus Sparmannia. This plant typically reaches a height of 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) with a similar spread, and has a bushy, rounded form. The heart-shaped leaves are large and bright green, adding a lush appearance to the plant. It produces showy clusters of yellow-centered, white flowers that are particularly abundant in the spring and early winter, attracting pollinators.

African hemp is valued for its rapid growth and attractive foliage, making it suitable for large indoor spaces or conservatories, as well as sheltered outdoor areas in mild climates. It is often used as a specimen plant or in mixed borders for its tropical appearance. Sparmannia africana prefers moist, well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of light conditions from part shade to full shade. It is relatively easy to maintain but may require pruning to shape and control its size. While generally pest-free, it can occasionally suffer from common greenhouse pests such as aphids and spider mites when grown indoors.CC BY-SA 4.0
