Estimated Native Range
Summary
Spathiphyllum wallisii, commonly known as Peace Lily, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the tropical rainforest floors of Colombia and Venezuela. It typically grows to a height of 1-4 feet (0.3-1.2 meters) and a width of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters). The Peace Lily is characterized by its glossy, dark green leaves and distinctive white spathes, which are modified leaves surrounding the true flowers. These spathes are showy and can give the appearance of a white flower, blooming mostly in the spring, although they can also flower sporadically throughout the year in ideal conditions.
The Peace Lily is celebrated for its ability to thrive in low light conditions, making it an excellent choice for indoor environments. It is also known for its air-purifying qualities, as it can absorb toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene from the air. In cultivation, it prefers moist, well-drained soil and consistent humidity, but it is tolerant of occasional over- or under-watering, which contributes to its reputation for ease of maintenance. Peace Lilies are commonly used as houseplants or in offices for their attractive foliage and flowers. They can also be planted en masse as a ground cover in tropical gardens. While generally pest-resistant, they can be susceptible to mealybugs and spider mites. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it is important to allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.CC BY-SA 4.0
