Estimated Native Range
Summary
Spiraea ×cinerea, commonly known as Garland Spirea, is a deciduous hybrid shrub resulting from a cross between Spiraea hypericifolia and Spiraea cana. It is native to temperate regions and is well-suited to a variety of garden settings. Typically, Garland Spirea reaches up to 4.9 feet in both height and width, presenting a compact, mounded form. Its small, lanceolate leaves are accompanied by clusters of white flowers that bloom profusely along the arching stems in spring, creating a striking display. The cultivar ’Grefsheim’ is especially esteemed for its dense flowering and has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
Garland Spirea is valued for its ease of maintenance and its ability to fit into small garden spaces or as part of mixed borders. It is hardy down to -4°F and performs best in full sun to part shade. The plant prefers well-drained soil and is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for a range of garden conditions. Regular pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and encourages new growth. While generally disease-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from leaf spot or fire blight. ’Grefsheim’ is particularly recommended for its abundant blooms and hardiness, making it a reliable choice for gardeners.CC BY-SA 4.0
