Summary
Stachys bullata, commonly known as California Hedgenettle, is a deciduous perennial herb that thrives in the understory of coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and oak woodlands, as well as in riparian zones throughout California. It typically grows up to 80 centimeters tall with an erect stem. The plant is characterized by its hairy, glandular inflorescence, which consists of whorls of interrupted clusters, each containing six small, tubular, pink to lavender flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer. The flowers are modest in size but can add a soft, delicate texture to garden settings.
California Hedgenettle is valued for its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a beneficial addition to wildlife gardens and naturalized areas. It is used in restoration projects, as a ground cover, and in informal borders. This plant prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. It is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage, and requires moderate watering. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew and should be spaced adequately to ensure good air circulation.CC BY-SA 4.0
