Estimated Native Range
Summary
Stachys germanica, commonly known as German Hedgenettle, Downy Woundwort, or German Betony, is a perennial herb that is native to a variety of habitats across Europe and Western Asia, including grasslands, meadows, and forest margins. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 1-1.5 feet (0.3-0.5 meters). The plant features woolly foliage and spikes of white to pink flowers that bloom in the summer, offering a modest display that can attract pollinators such as bees.
German Hedgenettle is valued for its medicinal properties, as it has been traditionally used to treat wounds and inflammation. In gardens, it is often used in border plantings, cottage gardens, or as part of a naturalistic planting scheme. It is relatively low maintenance, requiring medium amounts of water and thriving in a range of soil types, including clay, loam, or sandy soils with medium to fast drainage. It prefers full sun to part shade, which makes it versatile for different garden designs. While not particularly prone to diseases, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. It is also deer resistant, making it a good choice for areas with high deer populations.CC BY-SA 4.0
