Summary

Stipa gigantea, commonly known as Giant Feather Grass, is a semi-evergreen or deciduous perennial grass native to open woodlands and rocky slopes in the Mediterranean region, specifically Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. It forms a dense clump of narrow, gray-green leaf blades, creating a foliage mass 2–3 feet (0.61–0.91 m) in diameter. The plant’s appearance is characterized by its tall, elegant flower spikes that emerge silver-lavender in late spring, transition to a radiant golden hue over the summer, and persist in a tan color into winter. These spikes can reach up to 8 feet (2.4 m) tall, dramatically rising above the foliage and adding vertical interest to the landscape.

Giant Feather Grass is valued for its low water requirements and its ability to thrive in well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for drought-tolerant and Mediterranean gardens. It is often used as a focal point in parks, public landscapes, and private gardens, either as single specimens or in massed drifts. The tall golden flower spikes are particularly striking when backlit by the sun and can be used for dried flower arrangements. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
