Estimated Native Range
Summary
Stoebe plumosa, commonly known as Slangbos, is an evergreen shrub native to the fynbos and renosterveld regions of Southern Africa, including grasslands and plains, but not typically found in alpine areas. It typically reaches a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters), with a rounded and dense growth habit. Slangbos is characterized by its fine, feathery foliage and small, clustered purple or pink flowers that bloom in summer, adding a soft texture and color to the landscape. The flowers are not particularly showy but do attract pollinators.
Slangbos is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, sandy soils, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and low-maintenance gardens. It is often used in mass plantings for erosion control or as a filler in mixed borders. In cultivation, it requires full sun and well-drained soils, and while it tolerates medium amounts of water, it is quite drought-resistant once established. There are no widely known cultivars of this species in the horticultural trade. Potential problems include susceptibility to root rot in poorly drained soils. Slangbos is not known to be invasive outside its native range and generally does not pose a threat to other plant species when grown in gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
