Summary

Strongylodon macrobotrys, commonly known as Jade Vine, is an evergreen perennial vine native to the moist forests of the Philippines, particularly in ravines and along riverbanks where it can climb into the canopy. The vine can reach lengths of up to 18 meters, with thick stems that support its weight as it climbs. The unique turquoise to mint green color of its claw-shaped flowers is reminiscent of the minerals turquoise and jade, which is a rare hue in the plant world and highly sought after for its ornamental value. Flowering typically occurs in the spring, and the pendulous inflorescences, which can be up to 3 feet long, are produced by mature vines that are at least 2 years old.

Jade Vine is celebrated for its striking flower color and the dramatic effect of its cascading flower trusses when grown over arbors, pergolas, or other tall supports. It is a popular choice for tropical and subtropical gardens and is also cultivated in greenhouses in cooler climates. The plant requires protection from frost, with a minimum temperature of 15 °C (59 °F). It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers medium water and well-drained soils. While it is not typically prone to diseases, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
