Estimated Native Range
Summary
Strophostyles leiosperma, commonly known as slickseed fuzzybean, is an annual to short-lived perennial vine native to prairies, open woodlands, and along the edges of fields and roads in the central to western United States. It typically sprawls or climbs with the help of its twining stems, reaching lengths of up to 6 feet. The plant is characterized by its trifoliate leaves, which are covered with fine silky hairs that give it a soft texture. During the summer months, slickseed fuzzybean produces small, inconspicuous pea-shaped flowers that are usually pink or purple in color. Following flowering, it develops distinctive hairy seed pods.
Slickseed fuzzybean is valued for its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, making it a beneficial addition to gardens and agricultural systems. It is often used in native plant gardens, restoration projects, and as a cover crop. This plant thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils, although it is tolerant of a range of soil types. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal additional water once established. While not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can occasionally suffer from fungal issues in overly moist conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
