Summary
Symphyotrichum foliaceum, commonly known as Leafy Aster, Leafy-bracted Aster, or Alpine Leafybract Aster, is a perennial herb native to montane meadows, streambanks, and moist clearings in western North America, from British Columbia to California and east to Wyoming and New Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 10 to 60 centimeters (4 to 24 inches) and features a clumping form with lance-shaped leaves. The plant produces clusters of daisy-like flowers with violet to purple ray florets surrounding yellow disk florets from late summer to early fall, which are highly attractive to pollinators.
Leafy Aster is valued for its late-season blooms that add color to the garden when many other plants have finished flowering. It is suitable for wildflower gardens, borders, and naturalized areas, particularly in settings that mimic its native moist habitats. While it thrives in full sun, it can also tolerate part shade and requires soil with good drainage. Regular watering is important, especially in drier conditions. Leafy Aster is relatively low-maintenance but can be susceptible to powdery mildew and rust. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage a longer blooming period and prevent self-seeding if not desired.CC BY-SA 4.0
