Summary
Symphyotrichum tenuifolium, commonly known as Perennial Saltmarsh Aster, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to coastal salt marshes, brackish marshes, and tidal shores in the eastern United States. It is often found in the high marsh zones where salinity levels fluctuate. This aster typically grows to a height of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters) and spreads 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) wide. It features narrow, linear leaves and small, daisy-like flowers with yellow centers and pale purple to white rays that bloom from late summer to fall. The flowers are modest in size but can be quite showy when the plant is in full bloom.
The Perennial Saltmarsh Aster is valued for its adaptability to wet, saline conditions, making it suitable for coastal restoration projects and gardens that mimic such environments. It is also appreciated for its late-season blooms, which provide a nectar source for pollinators at a time when few other flowers are available. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade, consistent moisture, and can tolerate a range of soil types as long as they are well-draining. It is not commonly found in the horticultural trade but can be used in native plant gardens, rain gardens, and as a component of wildlife habitat plantings. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to rust and powdery mildew in overly humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
