Estimated Native Range
Summary
Syneilesis aconitifolia, commonly known as Shredded Umbrella Plant, is a semi-deciduous perennial herb native to forest margins and open woodlands in East Asia, particularly in China and Korea. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters), forming a mound of deeply cut, palmate leaves that resemble a shredded umbrella. The foliage emerges with a silvery-white down before maturing to a rich green. In summer, it produces small, inconspicuous pink and white flowers atop slender stems, which are not particularly showy compared to the striking foliage. The plant is valued for its unique texture and form in the garden.
Shredded Umbrella Plant is appreciated for its ease of maintenance and its ability to thrive in shaded conditions, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shade gardens, and as an understory plant. It is also used in borders for textural contrast. The plant prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and thrives in part shade to full shade. It is generally pest and disease-free but can suffer from root rot in overly wet conditions. While it is not invasive, it can slowly spread to form a dense clump, which can be divided in spring or fall to propagate or control its spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
