Summary

Syringa pekinensis, commonly known as Peking Lilac, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to the scrublands and forest edges of Central and Northern China. It typically grows to a height of 15 to 20 feet (4.6 to 6.1 m) and a spread of 10 to 15 feet (3.0 to 4.6 m). The Peking Lilac has an open, multi-stemmed form with arching branches and ovate dark green leaves that are 2 to 4 inches (51 to 102 mm) long. It produces showy panicles of fragrant, creamy yellowish-white flowers in early summer, which are highly attractive to pollinators. The flowers give way to loose clusters of brown capsules, and the bark is notable for its cherry-like, red-brown color that exfoliates with age.

The Peking Lilac is valued for its ornamental features, including its fragrant flowers and attractive bark. It is used in urban landscapes, as a specimen plant, or for border planting. This species is relatively low-maintenance, requiring medium amounts of water and thriving in moist, well-drained soils. It prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade, making it versatile for various garden settings. It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 7. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew and lilac borer. Gardeners should be aware of these potential issues and plant in optimal conditions to minimize problems.CC BY-SA 4.0
