Estimated Native Range
Summary
Syringa persica, commonly known as Persian Lilac, is a deciduous shrub that is a complex artificial hybrid involving Syringa x laciniata and Syringa afghanica, among others. Despite its common name, it is not native to Persia (Iran). It typically grows to a height of 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters) and a width of 4-8 feet (1.2-2.4 meters). Persian Lilac has a compact, multi-stemmed form with small, ovate leaves and produces clusters of fragrant, pale lilac to violet flowers in late spring, which are highly attractive to pollinators.
Persian Lilac is valued for its sweetly scented flowers and its relatively small size, which makes it suitable for smaller gardens and spaces. It is often used in border plantings, as a specimen shrub, or for informal hedges. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils with consistent moisture. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew and lilac borer. Pruning immediately after flowering can help maintain its shape and promote vigorous growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
