Syzygium cumini, commonly known as Java plum or jamun, is an evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent and adjoining regions of Southeast Asia. It is typically found in tropical forests and riverbanks, where it plays a role in the natural ecosystem by providing food for wildlife. The tree can grow up to 98 feet (30 meters) tall with a dense canopy that offers deep shade. Its leaves are glossy and leathery, and it produces fragrant white flowers that are followed by oblong, ovoid fruits. These fruits start out green and turn a deep purple or black when ripe, and are known for their astringent yet sweet flavor.

The Java plum is valued for its dense, evergreen foliage and the edible fruits, which are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. It is used in traditional medicine for its purported health benefits.
