Estimated Native Range
Summary
Syzygium samarangense, commonly known as Wax Apple or Java Apple, is an evergreen tree native to rainforests and coastal forests in Southeast Asia, including the Greater Sunda Islands, Malay Peninsula, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It can grow up to 39 feet (12 meters) tall and is characterized by its dense canopy and glossy, deep green leaves. The tree produces showy white to yellowish-white flowers, followed by bell-shaped fruits that vary in color from white to deep purple or black. The fruit is crisp and juicy with a mild, sweet flavor reminiscent of a snow pear. Wax Apple trees are prolific producers, with a single tree capable of yielding up to 700 fruits per crop.
Wax Apples are valued for their ornamental and edible qualities. The tree is often grown in tropical home gardens and commercial orchards for its fruit, which is consumed fresh and used in beverages and desserts. It thrives in warm, humid climates and requires well-drained, fertile soils with consistent moisture. Full sun exposure is ideal for fruit production. While generally low-maintenance, the tree can be susceptible to pests like fruit flies and diseases such as anthracnose. It is not known to be invasive outside its native range but should be monitored to prevent potential ecological impacts.CC BY-SA 4.0
