Estimated Native Range
Summary
Tabernaemontana catharinensis, commonly known as Pinwheel Flower, is a semi-deciduous shrub native to the Atlantic Forest biome in southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. It typically grows to a height of 2-3 meters (6.5-10 feet) and a similar width. The shrub features glossy, dark green leaves and produces fragrant, white, pinwheel-shaped flowers throughout the year, with peaks in spring and summer. The flowers are particularly showy and can attract pollinators such as butterflies. After flowering, it bears elongated, paired fruits that resemble beans.
Pinwheel Flower is valued for its ornamental flowers and is used in gardens for border planting, as a specimen plant, or for creating hedges. It thrives in well-drained soils, rich in organic matter, and prefers partial shade to full sun conditions. While it is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering promotes optimal growth and flowering. It is not known for any significant disease or pest issues, but it can be sensitive to frost. In cultivation, it is important to protect it from cold temperatures and to provide mulch to maintain soil moisture.CC BY-SA 4.0
