Summary

Tabernaemontana divaricata, commonly known as Pinwheel Flower, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to tropical forests of India and Southeast Asia. It thrives in the understory where it receives dappled sunlight. Typically, it grows to a height of 1.5–1.8 meters (5–6 ft) with a similar spread. The plant features large, shiny, deep green leaves that are about 15 cm (6 in) in length and 5 cm (2 in) in width. The waxy, fragrant blossoms are white and found in small clusters on the stem tips, blooming mainly in spring but with sporadic flowers appearing throughout the year. The flowers exhibit a characteristic ’pinwheel’ shape, a trait shared with other genera in the Apocynaceae family, such as Vinca and Nerium. Both single and double-flowered cultivars are popular, with the double-flowered form being particularly showy.

Pinwheel Flower is valued for its ornamental flowers, which are highly fragrant and add a tropical feel to gardens. It is often used in border planting, as a specimen plant, or as a container plant in regions where it is not hardy. It requires full sun to part shade, consistent moisture, and well-drained soil to thrive. While it is relatively easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to mealybugs and scale insects. The plant’s milky latex can be an irritant, so caution is advised when handling. In colder climates, it is commonly grown as a houseplant or in a greenhouse.CC BY-SA 4.0
