Summary

Tagetes lemmonii, commonly known as Lemmon’s Marigold, is an evergreen subshrub native to the sunny, open areas and canyons of Arizona and Northern Mexico. It can grow up to 240 cm (8 feet) tall and wide, with a bushy habit and fine-textured, aromatic foliage that releases a strong fragrance when brushed against or crushed. The plant is adorned with numerous small, golden-yellow flower heads arranged in a flat-topped cluster, each head featuring 3-8 ray florets surrounding 12-30 disc florets. Lemmon’s Marigold has a long blooming period from late fall into spring, sometimes flowering for up to 10 months in ideal conditions.

This species is highly valued for its extended flowering season, vibrant color, and drought tolerance, making it a popular choice for water-wise gardens, xeriscaping, and as an accent plant in mixed borders. It is also used for its aromatic foliage in herbal crafts. Lemmon’s Marigold thrives in full sun to part shade, requiring low water once established and preferring well-drained soils. While it is frost-tolerant, it can be damaged by heavy frosts and may require protection in colder climates. It is generally pest-free but can occasionally suffer from powdery mildew in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
