Estimated Native Range
Summary
Tara cacalaco, commonly known as Mexican Bushbird, is a semi-deciduous shrub or small tree native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Mexico, particularly thriving in desert scrub and thorn forests. It typically grows to a height of 15-20 feet (5-6 meters) and a width of 15 feet (5 meters), with a rounded and dense canopy. The plant is notable for its small, pinnate leaves and its ability to withstand dry conditions. During the fall and winter, it produces clusters of small, bright yellow flowers that add a splash of color to the landscape and attract pollinators.
Mexican Bushbird is valued for its drought tolerance and is often used in xeriscaping, as well as in wildlife gardens where its flowers can attract bees and butterflies. It is also used for erosion control due to its extensive root system. In cultivation, it requires minimal care, thriving in full sun and tolerating a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it can survive with low water once established, moderate watering will encourage more lush growth and flowering. This plant is not commonly affected by diseases or pests, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. However, it may not be suitable for very small gardens as it can spread quite widely.CC BY-SA 4.0
