Estimated Native Range
Summary
Thalictrum flavum, commonly known as Yellow Meadow Rue, is a deciduous perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including moist meadows, riverbanks, and the edges of deciduous forests across Europe and Western Asia. It typically grows to a height of 100 cm (39 in) and a width of 45 cm (18 in). The plant features airy clusters of small, fluffy, yellow flowers that are highly fragrant and bloom from June to August. Despite the common name, the flowers have white sepals; it is the profusion of long, erect, yellow stamens that give the blooms their yellow appearance. The foliage is bluish-green and fern-like, adding to its ornamental value.
Yellow Meadow Rue is valued for its delicate, textured foliage and attractive flowers, which can add a light, airy feel to garden borders and wildflower meadows. It is also used in naturalistic plantings and as a companion plant in moist garden areas. The plant prefers consistently moist soil and can tolerate both full sun and part shade, making it versatile for various garden settings. It requires soils with medium drainage and benefits from being planted in a sheltered location to protect its tall stems from strong winds. The cultivars ’Tukker Princess’ and Thalictrum flavum subsp. glaucum ’Ruth Lynden-Bell’ have been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for their garden performance. Gardeners should be aware that Thalictrum flavum can be potentially invasive when grown outside its native range, so it is important to check local guidelines before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
