Estimated Native Range
Summary
Thalictrum simplex, commonly known as Meadow Rue, is a perennial herb native to a variety of habitats in temperate Eurasia, including meadows, grassy slopes, and forest clearings. It is often found in calcareous soils, which are typical of its native regions. This species typically grows to a height of 30-90 cm (12-35 inches) and is known for its delicate, fine-textured foliage and airy clusters of small, pendulous, greenish-white flowers that bloom in early to mid-summer. The flowers are not particularly showy, but they add a subtle charm to the garden. The plant’s overall appearance is graceful, with slender stems and lacy leaves that resemble those of its cousin, the Columbine.
Meadow Rue is valued for its ethereal quality and is used to add texture and lightness to borders and wildflower gardens. It is relatively low maintenance and can thrive in a range of garden settings. In cultivation, it prefers partial shade to full sun, moist but well-drained soils, and can tolerate a range of soil pH, including alkaline conditions. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, powdery mildew can sometimes be a problem in humid conditions. Thalictrum simplex is not known for aggressive roots or significant invasiveness. Gardeners should note that it may require staking in windy sites due to its slender stems.CC BY-SA 4.0
