Summary
Thryptomene micrantha, commonly known as Ribbed Thryptomene, is a spreading to erect shrub native to a variety of habitats including heathland, open woodlands, and rocky slopes in southeastern Australia, specifically in South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania. It typically grows to a height of 1 to 5 feet and features small, egg-shaped leaves. The plant is notable for its delicate white flowers, each with five petals and five stamens, which bloom profusely from late winter to early spring (August to October) and are highly attractive to pollinators.
Ribbed Thryptomene is appreciated for its ornamental value, particularly its mass of small, starry flowers that can add a fine texture to garden compositions. It is often used in rockeries, as a low hedge or border plant, and in native plant gardens. This shrub thrives in well-drained soils, tolerates a range of soil types from sandy to loamy, and prefers full sun to part shade conditions. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. Ribbed Thryptomene can be pruned after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. In cultivation, it is generally free from major pests and diseases but can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
