Summary
Thyrsacanthus tubaeformis, commonly known as Firespike, is an evergreen shrub native to the understory of tropical rainforests in Central America. It typically grows to a height of two meters, but can be limited to half that size when grown in a container. Firespike is characterized by its glossy, dark green leaves and striking waxy flowers that form in twelve-inch spikes. The tubular flowers are usually a vibrant red, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies when they bloom in the autumn. Its showy blooms and the ability to flower under a variety of light conditions make it a popular ornamental plant.
Firespike is valued for its bright, showy flowers and ability to attract wildlife, making it a favorite for tropical and subtropical gardens. It is often used in borders, as a specimen plant, or in containers. While it can tolerate shade for half of the day, bright light is necessary for optimal flowering, though it should be protected from harsh afternoon sun. Firespike prefers evenly moist soils with good drainage and can be pruned back when growth becomes too tall or leggy. It is moderately fast-growing and can be propagated from cuttings. In regions with cooler climates, it can be grown as a houseplant or in a greenhouse.CC BY-SA 4.0
