Summary

Toona sinensis, commonly known as Chinese Cedar, is a deciduous tree native to forest margins, valleys, and riverbanks in East and Southeast Asia. It can grow up to 25 meters (82 ft) tall with a trunk diameter of up to 70 cm. The bark is brown and smooth on young trees, becoming scaly to shaggy as the tree matures. The leaves are pinnate, adding a feathery texture to the landscape. During summer, it produces panicles 30–50 cm long at the end of branches; each flower is small, 4–5 mm in diameter, with five white or pale pink petals, which are not particularly showy. However, the tree is valued for its aromatic foliage and the shade it provides.

Chinese Cedar is appreciated for its rapid growth and the pleasant shade it casts, making it suitable for large gardens and parks. It is also used for its timber and in traditional Chinese medicine. The wood is aromatic, deterring pests, and is used for making furniture and chests. Seeds require soaking in warm water to enhance germination. This species thrives in full sun and can tolerate a range of soil conditions, though it prefers medium drainage. It is relatively easy to maintain but can be susceptible to canker diseases and wood decay fungi.CC BY-SA 4.0
