Estimated Native Range
Summary
Torenia fournieri, commonly known as Bluewings or Wishbone Flower, is an annual herb native to the moist, shaded forest floors and grasslands of tropical Asia, including South and Southeast Asia. It typically grows to a height of 12–15 inches (30–38 cm) and features a bushy, compact form. The flowers of Torenia fournieri are tubular with a unique wishbone-shaped stamen arrangement, blooming in shades of blue, white, or pink with distinctive yellow markings, and they are quite showy from late spring to early fall. The plant has simple, opposite or subopposite leaves with serrated edges, which add to its textured appearance.
Bluewings is valued for its continuous flowering and ability to thrive in shaded conditions, making it a popular choice for adding color to darker areas of the garden. It is often used in border plantings, containers, hanging baskets, and as a ground cover. While it prefers consistently moist soil, it is important to avoid waterlogged conditions. Bluewings does best in part shade to full shade and benefits from rich, well-draining soil with good organic content. It is relatively low-maintenance but may require deadheading to promote continuous blooming. Pests such as aphids and spider mites can be a problem, and it is susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions. No cultivars are particularly popular, but the species itself is widely appreciated for its ornamental use.CC BY-SA 4.0
