Summary

Trachelospermum jasminoides, commonly known as Confederate Jasmine, is an evergreen perennial vine native to woodland margins and open forests in East Asia, including China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. It typically grows to a height of 2 feet and can spread 3-6 feet wide. This vine exhibits twining growth, emitting aerial roots when in contact with a moist surface, which allows it to climb supports. When cut, it exudes a white, milky latex characteristic of the Apocynaceae family. The foliage is dark green in summer, turning to a bronze hue in winter. Its highly fragrant, white flowers are 1–2 cm in diameter, with a tubular corolla that opens into five petal-like lobes, blooming from late spring to early summer.

Confederate Jasmine is valued for its sweetly scented flowers, evergreen foliage, and versatility in the landscape. It is used as a climbing vine on trellises, fences, and arbors, as a groundcover, and as a fragrant potted plant. It thrives in full sun to shade, preferring well-drained soil to avoid fungal issues. Moderate watering and fertilization are recommended. While it is adaptable to various soil drainage conditions, it is less tolerant of overly damp soils. Propagation is typically achieved through cuttings. Hardy in USDA Zones 8–10, it is widely planted in California and the Southeastern United States. Gardeners should be cautious as it can become invasive outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
