Estimated Native Range
Summary
Trachycarpus princeps, commonly known as Stone Gate Palm, is an evergreen palm tree native to the limestone cliffs and cold mountainous regions of Yunnan in South-Central China. It can grow up to 10 meters (33 ft) in height with a slender trunk diameter of 13–16 centimeters (5.1–6.3 in), which is characteristically covered in dense fibers except on the oldest parts where it becomes smoother. The leaves of the Stone Gate Palm are semicircular, measuring 0.9–1.2 meters (2 ft 11 in – 3 ft 11 in) in diameter, with 45–48 linear-lanceolate segments that split halfway into the leaf blade. The foliage is a bright medium green on the upper surface and a distinctive glaucous, bluish-white beneath, adding to its ornamental value. It produces blackish drupe fruits about 1 centimeter (0.39 in) long, covered in a pale waxy bloom, although these are not typically a prominent feature.
The Stone Gate Palm is valued for its striking blue-green foliage and its adaptability to a range of garden settings, including urban landscapes, where it can provide a dramatic vertical element. It is also appreciated for its cold hardiness compared to other palms, making it suitable for cultivation in cooler climates where many palms would not survive. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure to partial shade, consistent medium watering, and well-draining soils to thrive. While it is not known for having significant pest or disease issues, it may suffer from root rot if planted in poorly draining soils. It is also less tolerant of extreme heat, which should be considered when planting in warmer regions.CC BY-SA 4.0
