Trautvetteria carolinensis, commonly known as Carolina Bugbane or Tassel Rue, is a perennial herb native to the rich, moist soils of deciduous forests, stream banks, and mountainous regions in West Canada regions across the USA. This plant typically grows to a height of 2-5 feet (0.6-1.5 meters) and a width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). Carolina Bugbane features deeply lobed leaves and erect stems topped with panicles of small, creamy white, fragrant flowers that bloom in the summer, providing a showy display. The flowers are attractive to pollinators, particularly bees.

Carolina Bugbane is valued for its ornamental foliage and flowers, which add a delicate texture and a light, airy feel to shaded garden areas. It is ideal for woodland gardens, naturalized areas, or as a border plant in part to full shade. It requires consistently moist soil, rich in organic matter, and can tolerate clay or loam soils with medium to slow drainage. While it prefers medium amounts of water, it can tolerate some dryness once established. Gardeners should be aware that this plant may spread by rhizomes, but it is not typically aggressive.
