Trichophorum cespitosum, commonly known as Deergrass or Tufted Bulrush, is a densely tufted perennial sedge with wiry stems that can reach up to 12 inches in length. It is native to boreal and montane regions across the Northern Hemisphere, including parts of North America, Europe, and Asia. This sedge typically inhabits acidic, wet soils in bogs, moorlands, and wet heaths, often forming extensive mats. It is particularly common in the British Isles, where it can be found from sea level to 3,900 feet, especially in Scotland and Northwest England. Deergrass provides grazing for wildlife such as deer, cattle, and sheep.

Deergrass is valued for its ability to thrive in wet, challenging conditions where other plants might not survive, making it useful for habitat restoration and erosion control in appropriate regions. It requires consistently moist or wet soil and prefers full sun to part shade. While not commonly used in ornamental horticulture, it can be an interesting addition to water gardens or naturalized wetland areas.
