Estimated Native Range
Summary
Trifolium aureum, commonly known as large hop trefoil, is a biennial herb that is native to a variety of habitats across much of Eurasia, including grasslands, meadows, roadsides, and open woodlands. It typically grows to a height of 4-12 inches with a similar spread. The plant has trifoliate (three-parted) leaves and produces yellow flowers from late spring to midsummer. The flowers are arranged in small, elongated round inflorescences that are somewhat hop-like in appearance, hence the common name.
Large hop trefoil is appreciated for its nitrogen-fixing ability, which can improve soil fertility, making it useful in agricultural settings as a cover crop. It is also planted in wildflower meadows where its yellow flowers can add to the diversity and visual appeal. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained. It requires moderate water and can tolerate drought once established. While it is not commonly used in formal garden settings, it can be a component of ecological plantings and restoration projects. However, gardeners should be cautious as Trifolium aureum can be potentially invasive outside its native range, and it may outcompete native species in some environments.CC BY-SA 4.0
